June Roundup

June has practically left the building! This month was unusually busy so I'm looking forward to July which will hopefully be a bit quieter, given it is currently holidays and all. Despite the chaos I still got quite a bit of posting done on Nana Wintour. Here's a snippet of what's been happening around these parts during June. If you never want to miss a post you can follow me here on Bloglovin or over on Facebook.

CHANEL Perfection Lumiere Velvet Foundation-I can't be bothered putting the proper accents on this title because it's nearly 10pm and nobody got time 'fo that. Anyway, this was my review of my new favourite foundation. If you have combination skin then you're gonna love this one.

A Mini Mac Haul-A few little sneaky Mac trips have happened recently. I'm blaming their enticing round of limited edition collections. Those LE numbers may be gone but Peach Blossom certainly isn't. It's such a gorgeous, everyday shade.

Anxiety-As the title would suggest this post is quite outside my usual blogging comfort zone. I talked about my experiences with anxiety+panic attacks and what you can do to manage anxiety. If you know someone else with anxiety, there's also some tips for helping them out too.

A Blogger Induced Purchase-#annamademedoit. By Terry's Ombre Blackstar in Misty Rock in review. A fantastic eyeshadow crayon if you're feeling spendy or want something unique to wear on your lids.

The Extras: Auckland Eats-Looking for somewhere to dine out in Auckland? You're in luck! I've rounded up four of my favourite places for meals, dessert, even cake!

June Favourites

June, the month where Winter arrives and I reluctantly retire my Summer wardrobe for another year. This month it's been all about the eyes with these four fabulous products being on high rotation. There's also a new base love, a perfume I can't get enough of and the book that I just can't stop reading..

Anastasia Beverly Hills DipBrow Pomade-Strong eyebrow game in a jar. This gel-mousse hybrid leaves things looking a lot more natural and a lot more polished. The product itself is seriously pigmented so a little goes a long way. Once this sets in place it stays put all day. It's amazing stuff.

Mac Kohl Liner in Teddy-We all know about Anna and her enabling ways. I was actually helping a friend buy makeup when this fell into my hands after spying it in this post. Don't leave me unattended in Mac.. Teddy is a dark brown with a touch of copper to it. Think of it as the dolled-up sister of Coffee, also from Mac. I like to apply this close to the lashline and then smudge it out with a brush for a more lived in look. Again it stays put all day and its creaminess means it would work well as an eyeshadow base too. Love.

Chanel Perfection Lumiere Velvet Foundation-My experiences with foundation in the past have been dismal. Too orange, too dewy, too cakey. Then I met Perfection Lumiere Velvet, PLV for short. Combination and oily-skinned gals you will love this. Its matte-velvet finish counteracts redness and shine. It has buildable coverage and a shade range which is more in favour of paler complexions. It'll be a sad day if this ever gets discontinued.

The Extras: Auckland Eats

I may be biased being an Aucklander and all but in the last few years it seems like all these amazing culinary places have magically appeared. It's like that moment in Harry Potter when the food just appears before everyone's eyes. I'm not complaining because it means there's always somewhere around to find delicious treats to enjoy. If you're from Auckland you may have already frequented some of these. If you're not from around these parts and are looking for somewhere to eat tasty food then read on. I take no responsibility for any impromptu Saturday food trips...

Orleans-As tempted as I am to write about this one in a Southern dialect I will spare y'all (whoops) the pain. In case the name didn't act as a giveaway, Orleans is home to Southern comfort food. If you're a curly fries fan, you need to get some of those to start and share around your table. You can't go past the Chicken Waffle either. It sounds unusual, but trust me it is good. Their jugs of punch go down a treat as well. I really love the decor in here too. One of my friends described it as a "hipster's heaven" which is rather accurate.

Bluebells Cakery-If you follow me on Instagram you are bound to have seen at least one cupcake themed snap from Bluebells in my feed. They do the best cupcakes in Auckland. Now that's a bold claim, but it's one I stand by. Their sweet treats are never too sweet and the icing is never sickly. Wins in my books. It's a bit of a drive to get to Bluebells but it's well worth the visit. You can't go past their cupcakes or coconut ice. Hannah tells me the caramel slice is amazing too if you're a fan of that. Wash that cake down with one of their milkshakes in a jar. You won't regret it!

The Week #111

The Week in Instagrams @nanawintour: *A little bit of blog planning on Wednesday. I made up a nice 'lil schedule for July and also started working on a swap I'm doing with Tamira which is all very exciting! *Reading blogs on the sly. Shh.... *#annamademedoit. *A gorgeous heart card I picked up to send in the post. If you're in New Zealand you can find these at Trade Aid. *Hannah and I had another sleepover on the weekend and she bought me back these gems from Sydney. Thanks Hannah! x *I love blog sales, this was a score from Tamira's Instagram. I'm not sure if these YSL 'Kiss and Blush' products are out here yet but you can find them online here

Must-Watch of the Week Month: A few YouTubers have been vlogging every day this month but it's Zoe's that I have been enjoying the most. Many of you probably already watch her videos but her vlogs are great. If you're like me and are a bit obsessed with all things British then you will love them. Brighton looks so gorgeous! Not to mention Zoe is awesome too. You get the idea, go watch them if they float your boat.

Product of the Week: Maybelline Colour Elixir in Mauve Mystique*. These products (out soon) are more of an affordable alternative to the Dior Fluid Sticks. They apply creamy and stay quite glossy on the lips. The best part is they don't feel sticky at all and they are pretty long wearing. Mauve Mystique reminds me a bit of Mac's Syrup in liquid lipstick form. I have one of the pink shades of these too. I can't wait until the rest are out because there's some gorgeous colours in the lineup.

Must-Read of the Week: Nicole's post on the controversy surrounding high end makeup. I don't get a lot of flack for featuring high end products on my blog, but I know that's not for everyone so I do try to mix things up every now and again. I do agree with Nicole though that some products just perform better at a higher price and in some cases you do get what you pay for. I steer clear of drugstore foundations for instance because the colours usually tend to be off for me and will often drive my skin nuts. It's an interesting read and offers insights that I can relate to.

Added to the Wishlist: Fresh Sugar Lip Serum Advanced Therapy, a new product available from Sephora that launches in July. This product sounds interesting, perhaps it'll be a rival for this. Taking care of your lips, especially in Winter is such an important step. The Lip Serum promises to "firm and reduce fine lines around the lip area using flower and fruit extracts." I am intrigued..

A Blogger Induced Purchase

An alternative title for this post could've been 'The Anna Effect'. Anna, Vivianna Does Makeup as she is more commonly known, can sell me anything. The girl is an extraordinary enabler and you know if Anna loves something that it is bound to be good. That logic, combined with a little bit of a feeling spendy moment saw me purchasing one of the By Terry Ombre Blackstar eyeshadow crayons recently. They've often tempted me before. Mecca have them displayed right near the front of the store, perfect to reach for and swatch...

Everything Eyes

One of my favourite parts about doing my makeup is working on the eyes. Etching out precise eyebrows, attempting cat flicks with eyeliner, choosing eyeshadows and pigment to work with. I love it all! Bobbi Brown clearly know that many of us feel the same way as they have recently released a new book dedicated to eye makeup. They've also added a new mascara to their lineup which I was sent a couple of months back. Being the eye enthusiast that I am I thought I'd review them alongside one another so if you're obsessed with dressing up your peepers then read on...

The Sample Stash

Another highlight of the Sephora experience is of course leaving the checkout armed with free samples to try before you buy. If you're ordering internationally then you'll have to skip over the perfume vials but there are plenty of beauty and skincare goodies on offer as well. Here's what made its way into a couple of my recent Sephora orders. There's mini reviews and purchasing verdicts to cast your eyes over as well..

Make Up For Ever HD Pressed Powder-This powder is designed to soften the appearance of fine lines and pores. I kept it in my bag for the times when things began to look a bit too sheeny. This powder really made such a difference! Shine was kept at bay much longer and it left my skin looking much smoother. Purchase? If you're after a new powder for touch up then you should check this out. I personally prefer my Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder over this one but it is still a great alternative.

Dior Addict Fluid Stick, various shades-My favourite sample. It arrived packaged like the actual fluid sticks themselves and contained four sample shades to try. I tried the shade Wonderland, a gorgeous pink toned red. These are pretty pigmented but it is also easy to build up the colour to the intensity you want it to be. These don't feel overly sticky on the lips and last well. I'm looking forward to trying the other colours. Purchase? If you're feeling particularly spendy, absolutely. They are definitely one of my favourite lipgloss-lipstick hybrids.

Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes Mascara-Now this wasn't exactly a free sample as such but this mascara was one I had been wanting to try so it made its way into a recent Sephora order. This won't make your lashes look thicker but it is perfect for lengthening and separating. Like Tarte's other mascaras this one is also super long-wearing. Purchase? I have a few mascaras on the go at the moment but once they bite the dust I know this one will be tempting me.

The Week #110

The Week in Instagrams @nanawintour: *I took a little trip to Mag Nation when I was in Ponsonby the other day. They had the new Spaces book released by Frankie. Long story short I need it. *It was so cool seeing our subediting and design work that we did for Uni in print this week. *Kit Kat's, the reward for making it through the day tantrum free. *My Top 5 Real Techniques Brushes. *At the Maybelline Masterclass with Kelly Thompson on Wednesday. It was so fun! Keep an eye out for those Colour Elixirs and the Colour Tattoo Pigments. They're gorgeous. *My favourite Winter eye makeup at the moment-L'Oreal Bronzed Taupe and Illamasqua's Ore Pigment make one gorgeous duo.

Must-Watch of the Week: Esteé of Essie Button filmed a collab video with BooksAndQuills this week which was all about books. Now I don't know about you but I love reading and am always keeping an eye, or ear out for new recommendations. If you're in a similar boat then you'll enjoy this video and Sanne's blogs. She describes books like John Green's perfectly and is so interesting to watch+listen to.

Product of the Week: Jo Malone Peony and Blush Suede Cologne-You've probably seen this hiding in the back of some of my photos recently. Well, I am obsessed with it. Seriously, I'm staging a self-intervention so I don't wear it 24/7. That's how much I love it! Jo Malone describe this as "Flirtatious with the juicy bite of red apple and the opulence of jasmine, rose and gillyflower.  Mingling with the sensuality of soft, blush suede.  Luxurious and seductive." This cologne reminds me of a grown up, more sophisticated version of Daisy Eau So Fresh so if you like that then you're bound to love this.

Must-Read of the Week: Alix's Gluten and Dairy Free Pancakes. Whenever I go on semester-break I'm always looking for new recipes to try and these pancakes sound divine. They're super healthy and so easy to make. I'll definitely be giving these a go.

Added to the Wishlist: Nothing this week! I've not been near enough shops or reading enough beauty blogs clearly.

*Have the best weekend guys. This week's been so busy so I'm hoping the weekend is a bit more chilled. I'm off to Hannah's tomorrow for another sleepover which should be exciting but other than that I am hoping for sleep ins and perhaps a baking sesh or two!

PS-Thank you so much to everyone who commented, tweeted and emailed me about my anxiety post. I was really not expecting it to get such a positive response but knowing that it has helped people makes me so happy. That sounds really naff I know but it's true x.

Anxiety

Now as the title may suggest, this post is going to be something a bit different today. It seems fitting to begin with this quote: "don't compare your behind the scenes to someone else's highlight reel". What myself and other bloggers choose to share online is only a portion of what goes on in our lives. My life isn't a fairytale. Behind Nana Wintour I'm just Sophie. I'm just an everyday girl who doesn't always use skincare products at night, who cares about the opinions of other's far more than I should, who listens to sad songs when I shouldn't and who'll read a book multiple times over (The Fault In Our Stars, here's looking at you).

My Top 5 Real Techniques Brushes

Real Techniques is a brand that has made its way onto the blog many a time over the last year. Their brushes are such high quality and won't break the bank which is great when most high end brushes start around the 50 dollar mark here. Unlike other brands, a lot of the Real Techniques brushes are multi-use so you can use brushes for different purposes and with a range of products and textures. Today I thought I'd share with you my top five picks from their range. It was hard to narrow it down but these are the best of the best, the holy grails if you will. They're all must-haves in my opinion and here's why..

Multi Task Brush, available in this set-I'm a little bit of a blush noob and the multi task brush just makes life a whole lot easier. It never picks up too much colour, even with the most pigmented of blushers. There's no risk of looking like you've been in the sun just a tad too long. I like to use this with setting powders too as it leaves things looking a lot less cakey.

The Week #109

The Week in Instagrams @nanawintour: *A simple face inspired by Elle's Teen Vogue cover look. The girl crush continues. *New Bath and Body Works candles arrived from a recent eBay order! These are some of the most deliciously scented candles around and I love the mason jar ones. *Chanel Perfection Lumiere Velvet Foundation. *Britney and I went to see The Fault In Our Stars on Sunday and it was brilliant. So so sad obviously but I loved how John Green's flawless prose remained intact. *Playing around with Benefit's two new additions to the They're Real range. I asked on Instagram whether you'd like to see a review and all your double tapping seemed in favour. Stay tuned.. *A Snapchat turned 'gram. I was a bit excited to be getting rid of my 3000 word assignment.

Must-Watch of the Week: Lately I've been daydreaming of doing over my space, and by space I mean bedroom. New storage and wall decor are first on the list. So I've been enjoying the series of decor-themed posts that are appearing on a number of my favourite blogs. Back to storage, I daydream of Muji units for my beauty stash but in the meantime I've been admiring Tamira's from afar. If you're a bit beauty+organisation mad lovin' like me then go give that a watch.

A Mini Mac Haul

We all know I love a little Mac excursion. The results usually leave me with an arm covered in eyeshadow swatches, a new wishlist saved in the notes section of my phone and sometimes the odd black paper bag in hand. Y'know the one. Recently I've picked up a few new Mac bits and pieces. They've really been on top of their limited edition game so Maleficent and Alluring Aquatic were on my radar from the get go. Some of these products may be sold out in stores or online now but give your local Mac store a ring or check their websites just to be certain.

CHANEL Perfection Lumière Velvet Foundation

I've been unhappy with my foundation+tinted moisturiser base for a while. It was ever so slightly too dark for me. Don't get colour-matched in a department store under their harsh yellow lighting. Chanel's Vitalumiere Aqua foundation was on my radar for a while but I found it just a little bit too glowy for my combination skin. So you can imagine my excitement when I saw photos and reviews of the new Perfection Lumiere Velvet foundation appearing online. A foundation with a velvet-matte finish seems to be hard to come by so I was sold from the get go.

The Week #108

The Week in Instagrams @nanawintour: Side Note: This week's been a little less 'insta heavy. Apologies. *Lollies and cultural policy report writing. The lollies sweeten the deal. *A little mid-week treat from the Mac Alluring Aquatic collection. This is one of the eyeshadows in the shade Lorelei. *Anastasia Beverly Hills DipBrow Pomade. *A 'lil peek at prop corner, setting up to pres-hoot some upcoming blog and Facebook posts.

Must-Watch of the Week: Fun fact time: I am a glasses wearer. You may not know that because I don't think there's pictures of me in them on the blog as I usually tend to wear contact lenses instead. I find glasses frustrating during the day, particularly with makeup as I find it hard pairing eye makeup with them and also lip colours. Tanya filmed a video of everyday makeup for glasses wearers this week and it's stunning. Very simple, but I think with glasses it's important to be mindful of what features of the face you want to dress up.

Product of the Week: Chanel Perfection Lumiere Velvet-Surprise, surprise. I will not say too much because there's a review of this heading your way next week. What I will say though is combination skin gals, you will love it.

Anastasia Beverly Hills DipBrow Pomade

I'm very picky when it comes to my eyebrows. They can't be too obviously drawn on, they must look natural and not too thick. I've had many a makeover or brow tidy where I've come away with graphic, cartoon-esque brows that have had me rushing to find makeup wipes*. In short, I like my brows to still resemble eyebrows, but with a more polished, tidy look. When the Anastasia DipBrow Pomade was first released a few months ago it promptly sold out everywhere. So I joined the waitlist over on Cult Beauty and waited for it to return. Y'know how this goes...
